Queer Tango Wellington

Find intimate silence and learn to listen with your body.  Argentine Tango is an improvised dance, requiring intense concentration on the connection between partners. Mastery of the capacity to create physical connection imparts serenity, grounding, and – with remarkable frequency –  elation. Tango will also improve your balance, assertiveness, and sensitivity. And it’s sexy… 

 You do not need to bring a partner, previous dance experience, or “rhythm”. We encourage gender complexity and exploration. Everyone is welcome! Tango has no age limit.

$20 for the class and the practica.
..or… $15 for the class only, $7 for the practica only.

Every Monday from  7-9.30pm @ the Crossways  Community Centre in Mount Victoria.

From next Monday 5th September Matthew Civil will be teaching us! For those of you that don’t know Matthew yet, he has been dancing tango since 1998, and his passion for it is very eviden when you start to share tango with him. He was the first ever NZ professional stage tango champion and represented NZ at the 2006 World Tango Championships in Buenos Aires.

So we hope you can join us in welcoming Matthew and carrying on the Queer Tango tradition in our dance by encouraging experimentation and fluidity of roles. Such fun to be had, and a real satisfying way to explore connection through dance!

Our class will begin as usual 7pm at Crossways, followed by our Practica Dynamica from 8-9:30pm. Beginners are always welcome.

If you stay for the whole night, the cost will be $20 ($15 for class and $5 for practica). If you come for the practica alone, the cost will be $7.

We hope you can join us at Crossways on Monday 22 August for class with Grant Major from 7-8pm.  This will be followed by and our usual Practica Dynamica from 8-9.30pm. Grant will also be teaching us next Monday 29 August, and then Matthew Civil will be teaching us from Monday 5 September.

Practica Dynamica, hosted by Queer Tango Wellington, encourages fluidity of roles and experimentation. We welcome everyone to this space where you can experience, and have fun with, tango. Explore leading and/or following,and the exhilarating connection of Argentine tango. Dancers at all levels of experience are welcome to dance in the practica.

Spirit of the practica – we respect all styles of tango and support diversity of taste in attire, music, and self-expression. The one who invites a dance will lead, and we only give feedback after ascertaining that the person wants it. We feel free and encourage others to try new things, make mistakes and ask questions. We celebrate joyful motion, have fun and laugh at ourselves.

Starting Monday 22 August, the practica on Monday night (i.e. the one after the Crossways class) will start at 8pm and finish at 9.30pm.

Tonight is Vio’s last night dancing at Crossways, so come along and help us send her off in style.

We’ll be having a class as usual from 7-8pm, followed by a milonga and celebration from 8pm. Dress up, or not, but bring your dancing shoes and/or something to nibble or drink. We’ll dance up a storm while the snowflakes whirl outside…

Head along to Crossways on Monday 8 August where Vio will be running one of her last “Architecture / Aviation” class from 7-8pm, focussing on the creation and use of energy between movements. 

After class, the Practica Dynamica, hosted by Queer Tango Wellington, will run from 8-10pm.  The longer time slot is intended to create a tango destination for Monday nights and, because it is a supervised practica, you are welcome to ask questions of Vio (or any other guest teacher). The practica will have two-song tandas to encourage changes of partners and roles and will include about 1/4 non traditional tango music, to help dancers learn to dance Argentine tango to the music of the world. Dancers at all levels of experience are welcome to dance in the practica.

Spirit of the practica: we will respect all styles of tango and support diversity of taste in attire, music, and self-expression. We will contract dances using the cabeceo. The one who invites a dance will lead. We will only give feedback after ascertaining that the person wants it. We will celebrate joyful motion across the dance floor and through the air! We will try to circulate around the dance floor in a mostly counterclockwise direction. We will feel free to try new things, make mistakes, ask questions, smile, and laugh at ourselves.
